The Housing Branch is responsible for managing all facets of Coast Guard housing in the 17th District area of responsibility including government owned and leased housing. Housing serves as the customer service "front desk" and will assist the residents with any issues they may encounter while occupying their home. In most cases, they will coordinate with other service providers to provide necessary service; i.e., Facility Maintenance, which will be directed to the local Facility Engineering Office.  They also brief, plan, execute, and maintain a housing referral program within the AOR.  Inbound members to Base Ketchikan or attached commands are encouraged to contact the housing office for local rental listings.  Before considering signing a lease for a rental, CG members should contact the D17 legal assistance command first to ask for assistance with reviewing it.  This service is provided free to CG members.  They can be reached at (907) 487-5474.

Personnel with orders to Southeast Alaska are required to submit a Housing Application to the area housing office upon receiving PCS orders.  Prior to entering into a lease agreement or purchasing a home, it is important to obtain a release from mandatory assignment to Government Housing through the Area Housing Officer, failure to do so may result in a forfeiture of BAH.  The Area Housing Officer reviews each Housing Application as there are unique requirements depending on number of dependents, electing an unaccompanied OCONUS tour, shore based or ship based assignments, and rank.  Members should contact the area housing office to obtain more information for their circumstance.  Housing costs and availability are historically challenging in Southeast Alaska, as most homes and rentals are smaller than CONUS locations and rental and utility costs can be much higher. The area housing office also maintains a rental referral site at www.homes.mil to inform CG members of available listings.

Before considering signing a lease for a rental, CG members should contact the D17 legal assistance command first to ask for assistance with reviewing it.  This service is provided free to CG members.  They can be reached at (907) 487-5474.
