Aviation Safety

The primary objective of the Aviation Safety Program is to support Coast Guard Office of Safety and Environmental Health (CG-113) mission, vision and values by providing safety oversight and advocacy for aviation assets, systems and missions. The Aviation Safety Program also serves as the aviation-specific service center for fleet commands and Flight Safety Officers (FSO).

Aviation System and Mission Safety Advocacy
The Aviation Safety Program provides oversight and safety advocacy for all Coast Guard airframes, systems and related mission activities.

Flight Safety Officer Program
CG-1131 acts as the service center for all aviation safety matters and fleet FSOs. FSO support information is available within the CGPORTAL. To access the FSO portal page enter keywords “Flight Safety” in any open CGPORTAL search block.

Crew Resource Management
Crew Resource Management (CRM) is the effective use of all available resources for flight crews to assure safe and efficient flight operations, reduce error and avoid stress.

Maintenance Resource Management
Maintenance Resource Management (MRM) is a general process for maintaining an effective level of communication and safety in maintenance operations.

Mishap Response
Mishap response policies are detailed in the Safety and Environmental Health Manual, COMDTINST M5100.47 (series). Detailed aviation mishap response procedures are provided in the FSO CGPORTAL.
