The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that supports the Coast Guard in many varied ways. Formed in 1939 as the Volunteer Reserve, we have continued to work closely with the Active Duty since that inception date.

Our mission is:

  • To promote and improve recreational boating safety
  • To provide a diverse array of specialized skills, trained crews and capable facilities to augment the Coast Guard and enhance safety and security of our ports, waterways, and coastal regions.
  • To support Coast Guard operational, administrative, and logistical requirements

The only mission we do not support is law enforcement.

Our missions include:

  • Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) – a program for high school students interested in attending the Academy (conducted at the Academy)
  • Administrative support – in a variety of ways at all levels of the Coast Guard
  • Aids to Navigation (ATON) – checking buoy positions and working with the Coast Guard, National Ocean Service and the Corps of Engineers
  • America’s Waterways Watch – similar to neighborhood watch only on the water
  • Bridge Administration – supports the Coast Guard Bridge Administration program
  • Contingency Preparedness – other than for law enforcement
  • Merchant Mariner Licensing – work in those offices
  • Operational Support of the Coast Guard – work with stations on small boats
  • Port Safety & Security – boarding’s, assistance to Coast Guard efforts
  • Public Affairs (PA) – support Coast Guard and Auxiliary PA programs
  • Recreational Boating Safety (RBS) – public classes, vessel exams, recreational boating inspections
  • Recruiting – assist Coast Guard recruiting efforts
  • Search & Rescue – search planning and assistance
  • Training:  Assist in teaching courses to Active and Reserve members
  • Inspection of commercial vessels – barges, T-Boats
  • Waterways Management
