Compensatory Time Off for Travel

  • Compensatory Time Off (Comp Time) for Travel is time off with pay that is earned by an employee for time spent in a travel status away from the employee’s official duty station when such time is not otherwise compensable.
  • Comp Time for Travel may only be earned for time in a travel status that is officially authorized, and may include:
    • Time spent traveling between the official duty station and a temporary duty station.
    • Travel outside of regular working hours between an employee’s home or worksite to a temporary duty station.
    • Time spent traveling between two temporary duty stations.
    • The “usual waiting time” preceding or interrupting such travel (e.g. waiting at an airport for a departing flight).
  • An “extended” waiting period, during which time the employee is free to rest, sleep or otherwise use the time for his/her own purposes – is not considered time in a travel status, and is not credited as earned comp time for travel.
  • Comp time for travel is credited in 15 minute increments. Accrued comp time for travel is forfeited by the employee under the following circumstances:
    • If not used by the end of the 26th pay period after the pay period in which it was earned.
    • Upon voluntary transfer to another agency.
    • Upon movement to position not eligible to accrue comp time for travel (i.e. Senior Executive Service).
    • Upon separation from the Federal government.
  • There is no limit in the amount of comp time for travel an employee may earn. However, under no circumstances may an employee receive payment for any unused comp time off for travel.
