XD's Biography
Edward J. Gibbons became the first Executive Director of US Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center in December 2017. His appointment marked the creation of a new position as second in command to ALC’s Commanding Officer, Captain Randy Hartnett. The Executive Director position adds a civilian employee perspective to the ALC leadership team joining the military Executive Officer and the Command Master Chief.
Ed Gibbons is a retired Coast Guard Officer and member of the Aeronautical Engineering community. He is a former Commanding Officer of ALC, and has also served ALC as the H60 Product Line Manager. and more recently as the Program Manager for the Business Operations Division contract team as a member of the Elizabeth City based company Vector CSP.
Beyond ALC, Ed had a diverse operational and staff career in the Coast Guard. He was a career rotary wing aviator with operational experience in both of the Coast Guard’s helicopter types: the H-65 Dolphin and the H-60 Jayhawk. His operational aviation tours of duty began in 1989 after receiving his Naval Aviator Wings from Navy Flight School with his first assignment at Group/Air Station Astoria, OR, where he also achieved the Aircraft Maintenance Officer designation and officially became a “Red Ragger.” Subsequently, he has flown in several operating areas, serving at Air Station Miami, Air Station/Activities San Diego (as Engineering Officer) and Air Station Cape Cod MA as Executive Officer, fleeting up to serve as Commanding Officer for his last year of his tour. Ed also held key staff positions, serving as the Fifth Coast Guard District’s Chief of Response and as the Director of Mission Support Integration at Coast Guard Headquarters on the staff of the Deputy Commandant of Mission Support.
A 1985 graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy, Ed’s first tour of duty was a Deck Watch Officer on the USCGC BOUTWELL (WHEC-719), based in Seattle WA, conducting several Alaska Patrols, but most noteworthy for the personal highlight of meeting his wife June. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a Master of Business Administration Degree from City University in Seattle, WA. He also holds a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the US Naval War College. His military awards include the Legion of Merit (2), the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the Air Medal, and several others.
