Petty Officer 1st Class Tara Molle

A new figurehead for Coast Guard Cutter Eagle arrived at the Coast Guard Yard Aug. 9. The Acquisition Directorate’s In-Service Vessel Sustainment Program partnered with the Medium Endurance Cutter Product Line to procure the new figurehead as part of Eagle’s service life extension program after considering the prohibitive restoration costs for the existing figurehead. Master woodcarver Shane Kinman, owner and lead sculptor of Master Sculptors LLC, was contracted to create a new figurehead for Eagle, which is the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service and is used as a training barque by the Coast Guard Academy. The figurehead is scheduled to be installed in October 2021 after Eagle completes its summer cadet training cruise.
