Search and Rescue Hoax Location Systems and Methods

The Coast Guard Research and Development Center completed its Search and Rescue Hoax Location Systems and Methods project this spring. Hoax distress calls needlessly place the lives of rescuers at risk and consume time and resources that would otherwise be available to meet legitimate mission needs. The project evaluated and demonstrated several technologies that could help the Coast Guard locate, identify and prosecute hoax callers. Researchers focused primarily on enhanced direction-finding capabilities, audio forensics and voice analytics, and social media. U.S. Coast Guard graphic.

A recent article on the Coast Guard Compass blog examines the project in detail.
