HC-27J Asset Project Office expands mission, changes name

The Coast Guard commemorated the name change and the expanded mission scope of the HC-27J Asset Project Office (APO) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 28 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Now called the Aviation Projects Acquisition Center (APAC), it will support acquisition activities for all Coast Guard aviation assets.

MH-65 program delivers upgraded helicopters to HITRON

The Coast Guard H-65 Conversion and Sustainment Program delivered CGNR 6555 to the Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) April 4. With this delivery, 40 of 98 Dolphin short range recovery helicopters have been converted to the “E” configuration, and six facilities have transitioned to the upgraded aircraft.

Coast Guard modifies contract to construct fourth offshore patrol cutter

The Coast Guard modified its current contract with Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) today to begin construction of the fourth offshore patrol cutter (OPC). Contract delivery of the fourth OPC, to be named “Rush,” is scheduled to occur in 2025.

Coast Guard commissions 47th fast response cutter in New York City

The Coast Guard commissioned the 47th fast response cutter (FRC), Clarence Sutphin Jr, April 21 in New York City. Clarence Sutphin Jr is the final of six FRCs that will be stationed in Manama, Bahrain. Vice Adm. Steven Poulin, Atlantic Area commander, presided over the ceremony.

Cutter Polar Star enjoys farm to galley produce, grown in the hangar

The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star was underway off Antarctica this January when 100 unexpectedly lush, green dinner salads showed up in the galley. This farm-to-table feat was possible because the lettuce was grown on the ship. For the past four months, researchers onboard have been experimenting with a vertical, hydroponic garden that has yielded at least three harvests so far.
