Cutter Polar Star enjoys farm to galley produce, grown in the hangar

The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star was underway off Antarctica this January when 100 unexpectedly lush, green dinner salads showed up in the galley. This farm-to-table feat was possible because the lettuce was grown on the ship. For the past four months, researchers onboard have been experimenting with a vertical, hydroponic garden that has yielded at least three harvests so far.

The Coast Guard commissioned the 46th fast response cutter (FRC), John Scheuerman, Feb. 23 in Tampa, Florida. John Scheuerman is the fifth of six planned FRCs stationed in Manama, Bahrain. Adm. Karl Schultz, commandant of the Coast Guard, presided over the ceremony.

FRC Emlen Tunnell continues namesake’s legacy of saving lives and advancing cross-cultural exchange

When selecting names for its cutters, the Coast Guard has honored notable African-Americans who paved the way for equal opportunities in the service. Before he became the first Black player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Emlen Tunnell served in the Coast Guard and was credited with saving the lives of two shipmates in separate incidents.

Vice Adm.
