Last month, MK-A School students from Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown demonstrated the Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to service and community support by stepping up to assist hard-hit Asheville, NC, with Hurricane Helene cleanup and recovery. The hurricane claimed more than 70 lives and left more than 500 residents homeless in the Asheville area alone.

During the dedicated three-day effort, they volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse to positively impact the community by working tirelessly to remove more than six tons of debris from roadways and cleared affected homes of insulation, carpets and furniture, helping families begin the long journey of rebuilding.

These student volunteers’ work not only aided affected communities in rebuilding but also reinforced the strong bond between the Coast Guard and the people it serves. The hands-on contribution provided critical support to those in need, instilling in these students a profound sense of purpose and resilience that will shape them as they move forward in their Coast Guard careers.
