About the Program

The DHS Leader Development Program (LDP) requires all civilian supervisors, managers, and executives beyond their first year to complete 24 hours of continuous leader development, often referred to as the “12/12". Deadline to self-certify is 01 OCT.

This includes:

Leader-As-Teacher “Give-Back”

Many supervisors “give-back” in numerous ways and never think about the valuable role they play in leader development -- DHS wants to recognize that significant effort and encourage more of it.

Leader-as Teacher "Give Back" can include activities including serving as an instructor, coach, mentor, author, speaker, or in some way contributing one's expertise to developing others' leadership, aside from supervisory responsibilities.

Resources

The best way for leaders to learn is when it is a “part of” and not “apart from” their busy day—and there is opportunity to learn everywhere. Some of the most common ways in which leaders learn are:

  • Experiential Learning

Learning that puts theory into practice through real-life work experiences that integrates learning within the workplace. This may include rotations, details, serving in an “acting" capacity, action groups or tiger teams, or even simulations and gamification.

  • Relational Learning

Learning that benefits from the perspectives or expertise of individuals or groups that share and learn together. This may include feedback assessments, coaching, mentoring, book clubs or even a peer discussion.

  • Self-Directed Learning

Learning without specified deadlines or meetings. Includes taking the initiative to complete the learning activity or assignments within their own timeframe, such as reading, journaling, or watching videos or presentations.

  • Traditional Learning

Includes activities that involve participation in a classroom setting, academic or professional association conference, workshops, online courses, or virtual interactive training.
