About the Course

The Management Development I (formerly Seminar for New Managers), conducted by the Office of Personnel Management's Management Development Center, provides new managers the opportunity to learn and hone the essential skills necessary for successful transition into entry level management. It is also appropriate for more experienced managers who have not yet had the opportunity for formal development of these skills. The program strengthens the employee's competencies in the area of continual learning, resilience, service motivation, conflict management, cultural awareness, customer service, problem solving, technical credibility, human resources management, interpersonal skills, and written communication.

The training requires participants to be away from their position for 2 weeks.


Participant Objectives

  1. Gain skills to accomplish work through subordinates.
  2. Achieve an enhanced sense of how to adapt leadership style to the diverse backgrounds of the people with whom they work.
  3. Know how to better understand the flexibilities available to them in managing human resources within the broad framework of the merit system.
  4. Acquire an increased enthusiasm for their leadership role and the knowledge and tools to make more confident and effective contributions.

  2. Write a statement that describes:
    1. Your current leadership responsibilities
    2. A recent work experience that involved extensive collaboration.
  3. Complete a resume (the resume should address job accomplishments)   
    1. Email the statement as an attachment to HQS-SMB-CG-128TrainingCourses@uscg.mil.
    2. Include the course title and convening date within the subject line of the email.
    3. Include your supervisor in the cc: line of the email.
